A large body of Vanessa’s work has been
inspired by history developed in the mid-1990’s, a time
when South Africa was experiencing violent unrest and political
uncertainty during its transition of government after the
dark days of apartheid.
Her major oil paintings reflected this sense of unease, focusing
on themes of history, colonialism and the politics of being
a white woman in that newly emerging country.
Now based in Perth, Vanessa’s current work explores
themes drawn from the city’s local history. She is particularly
interested in the stories that reflect the hardship of pioneering
Western Australia, the harshness of the land and the colourful
personal stories of those who make up the rich tapestry of
the land.
